Aeroponic Farming

WORKSHEET

1. Suggested Use

Skill and culture focus, followed by A2-level vocabulary and grammar activities.

2. Suggested Activities

A. Project-based learning
Students imagine they are opening a small ‘farm of the future’ in their country - a place that uses new technology to grow food. They decide what kind of food they will grow (e.g. fruit, vegetables, herbs), what method they will use (using the video and any additional research to help them), and how it helps the planet. Students create a short description or simple poster to present their farm idea using language from the video.

B. Mediation task: Collaborating to construct meaning
Write key words from the video on the board before students watch, e.g. grow, vegetables, roots, water, food, farm, climate etc. Put students into groups to come up with their idea of what the video is about. Get feedback, then give a few more words to see if students change their ideas, e.g. Kuwait, desert, dry. Have students watch the video to confirm their ideas.

C. Pronunciation task: Vowel sounds + schwa
Write the vowel sounds from the video on the board and example words, e.g. /iː/, /ɪ/ /ə/. Have students identify the sounds in the script. Model, drill and practise the sounds in words then have students write sentences to practise the words in context.

TRANSCRIPT
Aeroponic Farming

NARRATOR:
In the hot desert of northern Kuwait, something surprising is growing: fresh green vegetables. They are growing without soil, using a method called aeroponics. The roots hang in the air. A fine mist of water and plant food sprays onto them. This system uses less water and space than normal farming. Special lights help the plants grow. It grows 24 times more food than regular farms. The farm is called Green Life Farm. It started in 2019 and is the first aeroponic farm in Kuwait. The farm is inside a big greenhouse — about the size of a football field. Greenhouses like this need a lot of care to work well.

SOUNDBITE - Basile Giroud:
"The most important thing in a greenhouse to keep under control is the climate. The climate includes temperature, humidity, shading and other things."

NARRATOR:
Kuwait is mostly desert, so it’s hard to grow food.  The country gets more than 80% of its food from other places. This new way of farming could help with food problems in dry places. It also helps save water and grow healthy food locally. This farm in the desert could be an important step toward a greener future.
