Floating Book Fair
WORKSHEET
1. Suggested Use
Reading, travel and global culture focus, followed by A2+-level vocabulary and grammar activities.
2. Suggested Activities
A: Project-based learning
Students work in small groups to design a travelling library project that brings books or knowledge to people in different places - inspired by The Logos Hope. They choose a format: bus, train, boat, or online library then decide where it travels, what kind of books or learning it offers and who it helps. Students write a short paragraph (80–100 words) describing their idea and explaining how it brings people together. They also design a poster which students display around the classroom for an ‘exhibition’ style task.
B. Mediation task: Facilitating collaborative interaction with peers
Put students into groups. Have them assign themselves as agree and disagree and choose one facilitator in the group. Have students watch the video again and make notes on why books are (or aren;t) important and why a project like this is essential. Students have a mini debate, with the facilitator making sure every student speaks and responds to what the opposing person says.
C. Pronunciation task: /b/ and /v/ sounds
Have students watch the video and note down the words they hear with /b/ and /v/ sounds. Have them come and write them on the board, e.g. books, board, Bahrain, volunteers, visit, very, buy etc. Model the difference in the sounds and have students practise them. Have students write example sentences using the words to give to another student to practise the sounds.

TRANSCRIPT
Floating Book Fair
NARRATOR:
The Logos Hope is a ship filled with books. It travels from country to country, and now it’s stopping in Bahrain. People can go on board to buy books. Since 2009, the ship has been sailing around the world with books on many topics. The ship’s goal is to bring stories and learning to people everywhere.
SOUNDBITE - Edward David:
"We want to share knowledge, help, and hope. And the way we’re doing knowledge is that we are the world's largest floating book fair. We carry about 5,000 different titles, about 800,000 books and that’s available for every member of the family. So we have from kindergarten, right up to university level, but also anybody from any walk of life that come into the ship and buy books."
NARRATOR:
The volunteers working on the ship come from many countries. They meet people and experience different cultures as they visit new places.
SOUNDBITE - Edward David:
"On the ship, we have 300 people from almost 70 different countries. We are also learning about other cultures, cultures on board that are represented, but also cultures that we come into in different ports and the countries that we come in.
NARRATOR:
Visitors say the ship is an interesting place.
SOUNDBITE - Joshua Racho:
"This ship provides different features and services, and as we came on board the ship, we were very excited. As we see on-board, we have these books. As we know today, that people are not often into books as they are more into mobile and gadgets. And that is why this is very heartwarming to see."
NARRATOR:
For people who enjoy reading, this floating book fair is a unique way to find new books.
