Young Cab Driver

NARRATOR:
Achieving life goals takes time and hard work. Connor Dill had a very clear goal. He was going to learn to drive and become a black cab driver in London. To become a black cab driver in London, people must pass a very difficult test called “The Knowledge.” It is one of the hardest memory tests in the world. Drivers must learn thousands of streets and places across the city. When a passenger gets in the taxi, the driver must know the best way to go. They cannot use a map or a phone. Connor spent years learning this.

SOUNDBITE - Connor Dill:
“Well, it's taken me three years from start to finish to actually get my badge. It took me two and a half years to get The Knowledge done. And now that it's done, I can go to work.”

NARRATOR:
After they pass the test, drivers get a badge. Connor passed the test when he was 20 years old, but he had to wait until he was 21 to get his badge and start working. Now, on his 21st birthday, the day is here. He now has his licence, his badge, and his cab. It is his first day on the job.

SOUNDBITE - Connor Dill:
“I just can't describe it. It's such a good feeling to finally be behind a wheel of a black cab. There's, honestly, there's no other feeling like it.”

NARRATOR:
Connor enjoys meeting people. This is a big part of the job.

SOUNDBITE - Connor Dill:
“I love the people. I like talking to people. It's my favourite thing to do. Even if they don't want to talk to me, I still see if they want to talk to me, see if I can get a conversation out of them. If not, there's no worries, really.”

NARRATOR:
His family always supported him and wanted him to be happy.

SOUNDBITE - Casey Johnson:
“I wanted him to do what makes him happy. Do what you love because you've got to do it every day.”

NARRATOR:
Connor had this dream when he was very young. He first had the idea when he was just five years old, after a special day with his grandfather. They rode in a black cab.

SOUNDBITE - Martin Johnson:
“And he loved it. And ever since then he's always wanted to be a black cab driver. And the good thing is I might be able to get a lift now and then!”

NARRATOR:
Connor worked hard for many years, and now he earns money doing the job he always wanted.

SOUNDBITE - Connor Dill:
“Oh, it’s a fantastic job.”

NARRATOR:
Connor’s story shows what can happen with a clear goal and hard work.
