TRANSCRIPT
AI Teaching in Schools
NARRATOR:
At one school in London, a new term has started. There are new classmates and new classrooms—but no new teachers. Instead, some subjects like English, maths, and science are now taught by artificial intelligence, or AI.
SOUNDBITE - AI teacher:
“I have simplified the concepts and graphics.”
NARRATOR:
This AI system is a special computer program. It understands students' answers and then asks new questions that match their level. Human “Learning Coaches” are there to help students if they need support.
SOUNDBITE - AI teacher:
“Let's see an example.”
SOUNDBITE - Alexander Vansittart:
“The AI can take in all of their answers, correct or incorrect, and plot exactly where they are in the curriculum. So it has kind of a higher knowledge of exactly where that student is. And then it can adapt questions to support them. It gives them material they don't know and lets them revise the stuff they do much later.”
NARRATOR:
Students also use virtual reality, or VR, with their lessons. This helps them study in new ways.
SOUNDBITE - Massa Aldalate:
“You can tell apart more things because you can turn it around and see it form in front of you as you like as well.”
NARRATOR:
These new teaching tools can give a different experience compared to learning from a human teacher.
SOUNDBITE - Massa Aldalate:
“Um, well, you are not afraid to ask questions because a robot wouldn't judge and you don't even need to ask the questions. It can just tell where you need help and where you don't.”
SOUNDBITE - AI teacher:
“Activators or silencers.”
NARRATOR:
This AI is now being used to help students prepare for their exams. But some people think education should be about more than just passing tests. They believe it should also help students with their mental health.
SOUNDBITE - Daniel Kebede:
“Learning is a social experience. We are living in an environment currently where we have the second most unhappiest 15 year olds. That is down to a direction of travel, where children are spending more and more time on their own, more and more time in isolation.”
NARRATOR:
Daniel believes that it is important for students to interact with others, not just work alone. Does this mean AI will take over from human teachers?
SOUNDBITE - John Dalton:
“Absolutely not. AI is not going away. Education is going to be disrupted, but teachers cannot be replaced and nor should they be replaced.”
NARRATOR:
AI will not take the place of teachers, but it will change the way students learn. For now, humans are working with technology to decide how education will look in the future.
