Arctic Cruise
WORKSHEET
1. Suggested Use
Climate and adventure focus, followed by closed practice A1-level vocabulary and grammar activities.
2. Suggested Activities
A. Project-based learning
Students design a poster for an Arctic Adventure Cruise using language from the video.
They include:
a short description of what people can do (walk on ice, see the sea, go swimming)
what people need to wear and why
Images or drawings
Stick posters on the wall around the class and have an ‘exhibition’ style activity where students choose the cruise they’d like to go on.
B. Mediation task: Facilitating communication in delicate situations and agreements
Write phrases from the video on the board related to the cold weather, e.g. very cold, warm clothes, ice, go swimming etc. Divide students into small groups - half say it is fun to go on a cruise like this and the other students say it is not fun. Allow time for them to write notes with their reasons for their point of view.
Students have a group discussion to come to a conclusion about whether they would take a trip like this or not, using their notes to persuade the group.
C. Pronunciation task: Stress in collocations
Elicit, practise and drill stress in collocations from the video, e.g. break the ice, very cold, warm clothes, walk slowly, go swimming, keep warm.

TRANSCRIPT
Arctic Cruise
NARRATOR:
The Baltic Sea is between Sweden and Finland. In winter, the water turns to ice.
A big boat, called Polar Explorer, breaks the ice. It takes people on a trip. People stand on the boat. It is very cold. They wear warm clothes. Some people walk on the ice. It is hard and white. They walk slowly and carefully.
Then, something very unusual happens. People go swimming! The water is freezing. But they wear special suits. The suits keep them warm. They do not sink. They float on the water. At first, some people are scared. But when they try it, they have fun. They feel brave.
SOUNDBITE:
"I loved it! It was everything I hoped it would be."
NARRATOR:
It is a great day they will always remember.
