We use a lot of modern technology and digital devices in our daily lives. But some people are going back to older technology, like film cameras. Film cameras help us think about how we can have a healthier relationship with technology.
SOUNDBITE - Alex Falk:
“Good morning, how can I help you?”
NARRATOR:
This is Alex Falk. He works in a small shop in Pimlico, London. He sells and fixes film cameras.
SOUNDBITE - Alex Falk:
“I got this when I was about 13.”
NARRATOR:
Alex opened his first camera shop in 1962. In the past, people got their pictures printed and kept them in photo albums. But now people do this less often. They take photos and forget about them.
SOUNDBITE - Alex Falk:
“They're not doing it, they're not producing photo albums. Taking millions of pictures, leaving them on their phone.”
NARRATOR:
Alex and his team teach young people how to use film cameras. Most film shops closed in the past, but this shop is still open and popular. Many people like this old technology. Film photography is slower, so people think carefully before they take a photo. It is a good way to spend time without screens and enjoy the moment. Using less digital technology can help us feel calmer and more focused.
SOUNDBITE - Alex Falk:
“That's why people are coming back to us.”
NARRATOR:
Customers like to print photos to remember special events.
SOUNDBITE - Customer:
“Went through our old, like, sort of 6x4 prints. And I thought it was really sad that I had all these memories from when I was sort of a very small child, but sort of when digital cameras became a thing, we didn't really have any more photos from that sort of era. So my mum gave me her old point and shoot camera. I was able to go back to football, taking photos of every single game I attended. And just straight away I realised it was so important to document these moments.”
SOUNDBITE - Alex Falk:
“This is much more creative because you can make mistakes.”
NARRATOR:
Old technology can help us have better habits with new technology.
SOUNDBITE - Alex Falk:
“Much more fun.”
