Bank of Things
NARRATOR:
How can we make our neighbourhood a better place to live? In this busy part of London, people are working together to help young people. Inside a shopping centre in Lewisham, there is a small place called the Bank of Things. Some young people here do not always have enough money at home, so this place helps them. People aged 11 to 25 can come here after school. They can get things for learning, like a calculator or a dictionary. They can also get everyday items like soap and toothbrushes. They can even get advice about school and jobs. This idea came from young leaders in the area.
SOUNDBITE - Rosanna Campbell:
“Say a student doesn't have a revision guide and they need that revision guide for a certain lesson. If they don't have it, how are they supposed to achieve the grade that they want? Therefore, how are they going to be able to achieve the career that they want? So they won't be able to actually develop into the person that they want to be.”
SOUNDBITE - Femi Kololafe:
“I think it's a really nice way to give to the young people of the borough what they need and what they want.”
NARRATOR:
But for 14-year-old Micah, this is not just a place to get things.
SOUNDBITE - Micah Spence:
“I mean, this is a great space for young people to come by. It's almost like a youth club in the sense of young people being here. They could connect.”
NARRATOR:
Friendly spaces like this can make a good neighbourhood even better.
