Fashion for Everybody

NARRATOR:
Clothes are not just for style. They can help people feel happy and confident. Today, some designers are creating beautiful and practical clothes for people in wheelchairs. Vongai Ruzive is a British fashion designer. She is making clothes for people who are sitting down. Her designs are pretty, colourful, and easy to wear. Some clothes are detachable.

SOUNDBITE - Vongai Ruzive:
“So that means you can literally sit down, take it off from the front, from the shoulders, and from the sleeves.”

NARRATOR:
Vongai is thinking about comfort and small details. She is using large buttons, simple zips, and soft materials. Her model, Nell, is 18. She sometimes uses a wheelchair because of illness.

SOUNDBITE - Nell Clauvad:
“When I met Von and I saw what she did to help people like me, um, I wanted to help her. And when I tried it in my wheelchair, I was like, wow, okay, so there is a really big difference.”

NARRATOR:
Vongai is hoping her clothes will become popular. But she is not the only one. Faduma Farah is also helping to change fashion. After an illness, she started using a wheelchair.  She wanted nice clothes, but she could not find them. Now, she is working with a designer to create new clothes for wheelchair users.

SOUNDBITE - Faduma Farah:
“I want every disabled person to be able to get a shirt or a top or trousers in any shop they walk in, just like anybody else.”

NARRATOR:
She makes these clothes in a special way. The trousers are longer at the front than they are at the back. The pockets are lower and easy to reach. The sleeves help people move their arms and push the wheels. These designs are helping people a lot. More people can feel comfortable and confident every day.
