Manama’s Historic Market

WORKSHEET

1. Suggested Use

Culture and daily life focus, followed by A1-level vocabulary and grammar activities.

2. Suggested Activities

A. Project-based learning
Students create a short travel article or brochure page called ‘A Market in My Country.’ They write a short description of a market they know or have visited, using the video as a model.

They include:

  • where it is

  • what people can buy there

  • why people like it

Encourage them to write in full sentences, similar to the narrator: There are many stalls. People can buy food and gifts.

Students then put their work on the wall around the classroom for students to have a ‘market open day’ and decide which of the markets they’d like to visit and why.

B. Mediation task: Encouraging conceptual talk
Students discuss why traditional markets are important in Bahrain, using the video for ideas. Then they share information about traditional markets or shopping areas in their own countries - how they look, what they sell, and who visits them.

Alternatively, students research a famous market in another country (e.g. Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, London’s Borough Market, or Kyoto’s Nishiki Market) and share some interesting facts with a partner who then shares what they learnt with the class.

C. Pronunciation task: /ð/ and /θ/ (‘th’ sounds)
Have students identify the sounds in the video and write down the words, or use the videoscript to identify the words. They then decide which of the sounds are voiced and which are unvoiced, e.g. the, there, things, together. They think of more words and write example sentences to practise and drill the different sounds.

TRANSCRIPT
Manama’s Historic Market

NARRATOR:
Welcome to Manama. It is the capital city of Bahrain.

In the middle of the city, there is a famous gate called Bab Al Bahrain. It is over 75 years old. It is at the entrance to the old souk, a traditional market.

Many people visit this place. People can buy many things at the souk.

There are modern products and traditional items. Market stalls sell many things like food for cooking, things for your home, and gifts. There are also food shops where people can get something to eat.

People came here to buy and sell things in the past, too. Today, the souk is still a great place for shopping and culture.

The designs of the old gate and souk make Manama special. There are tall modern buildings close to the market. This shows that Bab Al Bahrain is a place that brings the past and present together.
